Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has offered Harry Maguire his advice on whether the Red Devils captain should leave Old Trafford in January. The England star impressed during the World Cup, but has been unable to find regular minutes under Erik ten Hag so far this campaign.
Maguire started United’s trip to Wolves on the bench on Saturday, as he did in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane’s regular centre-back partner this season, has only recently returned to the club after winning the World Cup in Qatar while Victor Lindelof has been unavailable due to illness.
Maguire has also suffered a bout of illness but came on in the victory over Forest. Despite his side’s several absences in defence, Luke Shaw was preferred to the skipper even though he has rarely played at centre-back during his career. It was the latest setback in a difficult two-year spell for Maguire at United, who has been linked with a move away from the club.
Ferdinand claimed that if he was in Maguire’s situation, he would be looking to leave United “right now” and find regular football elsewhere. “What it [Shaw at centre-back] does do is raise my eyebrows when I see Lindelof and Maguire on the bench,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
