Cody Gakpo has been told Liverpool FC are a better fit for his style than Manchester United at this time.
Gakpo, 23, has signed for the Reds this January window despite long-standing interest from Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag identifying him as a possible addition this summer. However, at that stage, United instead opted to recruit Antony with only room in the budget – and squad – for one attacking player.
Since then, Gakpo has underlined his burgeoning reputation at PSV and during the World Cup in Qatar by scoring three goals for the Netherlands in the tournament. United resisted a follow-up move this month due to being well-stocked in his preferred left side position, while Liverpool have paid €42million for his services.
Liverpool pressed forward with interest due to long-term injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
Speaking to radio station talkSPORT, former Netherlands player Ronald de Boer said: “I think it’s important for him. He’s better when he starts on the left and comes inside.
