Manchester United will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they take on Premier League table-toppers Arsenal on Sunday in order to place themselves right in the mix in the title race.

The game comes in the middle of a hectic run of January fixtures for Erik ten Hag’s side following their disappointing 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace midweek. After Bruno Fernandes had opened the scoring late in the first half with a curling effort United had appeared set to move into second place in the Premier League table.

But Michael Olise’s last-gasp free kick stopped the visitors from claiming all three points at Selhurst Park. The game proved to be a rare match where United forward Marcus Rashford has not managed to get himself on the scoresheet in recent weeks

The England international has eight goals in as many games since returning from Qatar for the World Cup and has been a hugely influential presence for his club in that period. Rashford will be hoping to get himself back on the scoresheet against Arsenal on Sunday – having scored twice against them in their previous meeting earlier this season as United ran out 3-1 winners at Old Trafford.

The forward scored two goals, but it was his teammate Christian Eriksen who received the Man of the Match award for an impressive performance, and Rashford applauded him after the game. In his assessment of the Dane’s performance, he made special mention of the supply of passes from his teammate throughout the game – as well as the contribution of Bruno Fernandes in helping him get behind the opponent’s backline.

It’s a massive game against Arsenal, the fact they’ve had such a good start to the season meant it was a big test for us,” Rashford told Sky Sports. “We showed up, we stood up to the challenge, we can be proud of ourselves.

“Sharp turnaround to the next game but it’s nice to get into the rhythm of things and keep playing games. It was tough, they are a good team, they know the principles, they’re a good position-based team. [They] offer a lot of difficult things with players dropping in pockets and some attacking threat, it’s a difficult game and we expected so we had to be up for the challenge.

“We’ve got some excellent passes of the ball and as long as we make three, four, five runs then we’re going to get the ball. We might not get it the first time but we have to keep going for 90 minutes.

“It’s tough, we have to give them possession where they can’t hurt because like I said they’re a good team, we tried to give the ball at the back and let them have time there then press them on the side.

“There’s a couple of times they got through the press, they are electric when they get going. It’s really important to keep going when Bruno, Chris are on the ball. It’s important to make them runs and give them options and we managed to do that.”

All three players will then, it seems, need to be on song if United are to claim a massive three points on Sunday to haul themselves right into the Premier League title race.
