Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford hailed teammate Luke Shaw’s versatility after he produced another strong and dependable performance at centre-back during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux.
Shaw, who enjoyed a solid World Cup campaign with England in Qatar, has started each of United’s last two matches in the left-sided centre-back position, joining forces with Raphael Varane in the heart of the defence. Lisandro Martinez has only recently returned from celebrating Argentina’s World Cup triumph and was not included in the squad, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were only among the substitutes.
Despite his inexperience of playing at centre-back in a back-four, Shaw has not looked fazed by the task, helping United end the year with back-to-back clean sheets, following their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Although it is by no means his natural role, he has certainly given manager Erik ten Hag an additional option moving forward.
“Shaw has done it for back-to-back games now and I’m not sure he is enjoying it as much as he is saying he is, but it is definitely a big plus for us to have players who are capable of playing in different positions because over the course of the season we’re going to need them.”
Rashford stepped off the bench at Molineux to score the winner and claim his 11th goal of the season. He showed tremendous strength and determination to hold onto the ball and fire a low effort past Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.
