Gary Neville names Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal quality that Manchester United most adopt

Gary Neville believes Manchester United’s attackers need to be as good defensively as they are offensively.

His criticism comes following United’s agonising late defeat by Arsenal on Sunday, all but ended their short-lived Premier League title hopes. Marcus Rashford had given Erik ten Hag’s side the lead with a brilliant strike before an Eddie Nketiah header and a long-range Bukayo Saka strike turned the tables.

Lisandro Martinez headed United back level but a last-gasp Nketiah winner saw the pace-setting Gunners extend their lead over United to 11 points. Neville believes United’s forwards weren’t compact enough during the match which allowed Arsenal plenty of opportunities to score.

The former United captain has advised Ten Hag to build a team, like Arsenal and Manchester City, which has forwards who are good going backwards as well as forwards.

“For me, the job of a United coach is to pick the best attacking players, but also for those attacking players out of possession to be really good defensively,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
