Four things spotted in Manchester United training as Shola Shoretire impresses again

Manchester United continued their preparations on the Carrington training pitch ahead of the Premier League clash against Wolves on New Year’s Eve.

Erik ten Hag‘s side secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in their first top-flight match back after the World Cup break, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred all getting on the scoresheet. The win saw the Reds move within a point of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth.

United face a difficult trip to the Molineux Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with Wolves – under new manager Julen Lopetegui – having defeated Everton on Boxing Day.

However, the Midlands outfit are still currently in the relegation zone and will be desperate to cause an upset against Ten Hag’s men, who themselves are keen to make the most of the hectic fixture schedule. Ahead of the upcoming clash against Wolves, MEN Sport has taken a look at the Reds in training and this is what we spotted.

Martinez and McClaren in conversation

As the coaches and players walked onto the pitch ahead of the training session, defender Lisandro Martinez and first-team coach Steve McClaren were deep in conversation. The Argentine centre-back missed the Carabao Cup victory over Burnley and the Premier League triumph over Forest, but he could be set to return against Wolves

Dalot returns to training

Diogo Dalot was back on the pitch at Carrington after being sidelined with an injury. The right-back, who came off early in Portugal’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Morocco, returned to United ahead of his scheduled date as he looked to build-up his fitness.

He missed the games against Burnley and Forest, but could be an option for Ten Hag against Wolves after returning to first-team training this week. In his absence, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been deputising – with the Englishman having played well in the last two matches.

Punishment press-ups

While it remains unclear why some United players were down on the floor doing press-ups during the session, the fact that it appears to have taken place after a small-sided game could potentially provide some context.

Following a training drill – which focused on moving the ball quickly and retaining possession – a group of Reds stars were spotted doing press-ups. Regardless of the context, it was done in good spirits and could have been a punishment for the team in dark green bibs ‘losing’ the game.

The Reds continue to integrate younger players during their training sessions, and one player who stood out was attacker Shola Shoretire. The 18-year-old did not appear to be overawed by the first-team players on the pitch at Carrington, with the youngster getting involved throughout.

While United are still looking to recruit a new striker in the upcoming transfer window, Shoretire will be hoping to get a chance to shine at some point in the coming months. He has scored four goals in eight matches in the Premier League 2 this term.
