England and USA played out a dull goalless draw in Friday’s World Cup clash at the Al Bayt Stadium. The Three Lions had gone into the game hoping to build on their 6-2 win over Iran at the beginning of the week. But that didn’t happen – and Express Sport will now take a look at four things we learned from the showdown.
Mount and Sterling need dropping
There’s no denying Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling are two superb footballers. They deserve to be in the England squad, even if their form for Chelsea has been iffy this season.
But they were poor for the Three Lions on Friday night and, though their selection is understandable, it’s time for Gareth Southgate to gamble by giving other players a chance instead.
Perhaps changing to a 4-2-3-1 formation would benefit England, with Phil Foden then coming in.
Foden would be useful as a No 10, particularly with England struggling to create chances for their forwards, while Marcus Rashford seems like the perfect replacement for Sterling.
